Taylor Swift was once known for her wild, crimped hair, but over the years she has let this go in favor of simpler, more sophisticated hairstyles. The star has always gravitated toward more of a vintage look with heavily drawn cat eyes and a bright, bold red lip, and her hair has tied this look together. While her hairstyle keeps changing depending on the occasion, her style has always remained fairly similar.
When Taylor Swift arrived at the Romeo and Juliet premiere in Los Angeles, all of the focus was on her new haircut. She wore an understated dress with minimal jewelry, so it appears that she hoped that all of the attention would be on her new hairstyle. But the reactions may not be as positive as Ms. Swift had originally hoped, with many commentators offering poor reactions to the haircut.
The Cut and Style
The hairstyle that Taylor Swift displayed at the Romeo and Juliet premiere is actually somewhat minimalistic when compared to some of the wilder, more intricate styles that pop stars are wearing today.
Fact 1: Taylor’s hair is already generously long, so the shoulder length hairdo does not appear to be getting any help from micro hair extensions the way many fans suspect she has filled out her hairline with in the past.
Fact 2: The salon hair products used in this look are also somewhat minimal, with her hair sitting fairly naturally along her shoulders. While Taylor used to focus on promoting curly hair care products she appears to be letting some of this go, with only a few light curls added to the bottom lengths of her hair. These curls appear to be in place simply to add a bit of volume to the rest of the look.
Fact 3: The top of her head looks as though her hair has been pulled straight, including a set of short bangs that sweep across her forehead, joining the rest of her hair just above the eyebrow.
The hairstyle itself is actually quite basic, but people are reacting with more gusto because this is a very different look for Taylor Swift. She often plays up her looks and opts for a very dramatic style, especially at runway events. This look is much more casual, and almost appears to take away from the rest of her look this evening.
The Comments are Harsh!
A quick review of fashion commentators and fans opinions reveals that people are not giving Taylor Swift’s new hairstyle a seal of approval.
Ashley Rose of Cambio notes that it looks like there was a confusing mix of styles that were used to create this look. The top is pulled straight but the bottom attempts to add in some of her signature curl, making the look feel disjointed. Rose went as far to call the stiff bangs across Swift’s forehead a “straightener nightmare!” and said it’s pretty awesome that Swift is willing to take fashion risks.
The comments from fans have been far less kind. People appear to be focusing on the bangs, which are fairly harsh when compared to the rest of the light, feathery look. They look out of place, and fans are calling the whole look “ugly” and saying “she never has good hair.”
Many of the comments note that the bangs appear to be cut unevenly, which makes the look appear cheap or rushed. While a majority of the comments appear to be on the negative side, there are a few weighing in that say the look is cute, which is a nice compliment, but may not have been what Taylor Swift was going for as she searches for a way to update herself to a new, adult image.
